Harmful nature of “Byes”

Another local tournament. I have three victories and one defeat in a pool of 5. Two of the victories are against “old acquaintances”, including the guy who took me out in this circuit’s previous tournament.

I end up 4th in direct elimination seeding, and get a bye into 16. This is not good, I need to change something. Should I start doing worse in pools? The problem is that it’s about 30 minutes between end of pools and start of DE bouts. First round of DE bouts is another 15 minutes, and then another 15 minutes pass before my turn for DE comes up.

So, it’s a full hour of not fencing, and I have cooled down. My opponent is warm and ready, he just fenced a bout 15 minutes ago. My fencing sucked, and I lost 15:11, taking 9th place out of 20. At that time I was absolutely certain that cooling down was the main reason for the loss. Now I’m not sure it was the main reason, but it definitely was a contributing factor.

Club tournament

I’m happy. Three victories, one defeat, and one of the victories is against the guy I previously couldn’t beat at all – neither at practice nor at club tournaments.

2nd place out of five.

Self-confidence is not always a good thing

Very small turn-out at an open tournament today.

I’m doing so-so in the pool – three victories, two defeats, and end up seeded fourth for direct elimination with a bye into 8.

First DE bout. That is, my first DE bout; it’s the second one for my opponent. He’s warm from the first bout, and I have cooled down in the time that passed after the pools. We have fenced each other many times already, the bouts were invariably very tough, but last 2-3 times I got the upper hand. And while I understand that now he has an advantage, and that I really need to concentrate and give this bout everything I got, somewhere deep lurks self-confident feeling that I shouldn’t lose this bout. Well, he fenced much better than me today, and the result is well-deserved – his victory 15:12, I take 6th place out of 12.
